Avoid Costly Home Insurance Claims

With summer upon us and plans in the making for some backyard fun, it’s important to take safety measures to avoid making a costly claim on your home insurance policy. Remember, small claims can be more expensive than large ones, especially if you have a considerable deductible to make before any payouts begin to take place. Also, filing several small claims on your policy can result in premium increases.

If you have a pool, be sure to ask if your homeowner’s policy details any safety guidelines you are required to follow, such as installing a certain height fence or locked gate for example. An insurance company can (and most will) deny coverage or cancel your policy if you do not follow the safety guidelines or do not inform the company when you install a pool. Check with your insurance agent for rates and safety guidelines before installing one. Owning a pool puts you at increased risk for liability losses. You may also want to consider purchasing an umbrella policy to provide liability coverage above what your homeowner’s policy offers.

Accidental damage increases significantly during the summer months. Be sure the kids are playing ball far from any windows. While those bounce houses are becoming more and more popular at children’s birthday parties, they are also the cause for thousands of injuries each year. Be sure if you rent a “bounce house” that your liability insurance is sufficient to cover any third party injuries. Never allow more weight in the bounce house than is recommended by the rental agency.

Never leave any grilled meals unattended. Have your gas or charcoal grill cleaned well before lighting it up this summer. Always be sure the grill is a safe distance from the house or any other structure. Backyard barbecues are a great way to relax, but they are also the cause of many home insurance claims.
